We all know that a good title for a book, an article, or a movie tells you what the composition is about. It is no different with Web pages. If you want your Web pages to rank well in the search engines then you need to use the keywords you want to rank for in the title. Those keywords also need to be in the text of the page, but that’s a whole other tip.

Two Titles are Better Than One

Every Web page actually has (or should have) two titles. You should have title that is visible on the page and in a large font size. For those of you that know some HTML you want to use an “H1″ tag to get the large font size. Having the title displayed this way not only tells the user what the page is about, but also tells the search engines what it is about.

Invisible but Visible Title

The second title is not visible on the page, but is visible at the top of the browser. This is the META title and it goes in the header section of your Web page. This title can be the same or different than the visible page title. In any event, it should also contain the main keyword for the page. It can be helpful to actually repeat the main keyword phrase twice in the META title. Google seem to give a litte extra emphasis for ranking when you repeat the keyword in the META title.

Keyword Rich and Enticing

The META title should not just be stuffed with keywords. It needs to make sense and be readable because Google and most search engines use it as the page title when they list your site in the search engine results. You want to make the META title something that a user would be tempted to click on when looking for the specific information you have on the page.

Different Titles for Every Page

It should be obvious, but you want to use a different title for every page on your Web site. Even if some pages target the same keyword, it is a good practice to vary the titles and make them unique just as every page on your site should also be unique. The search engines do not like duplicate content and your site will do much better in the search engine results when you keep everything on your site unique.
